**The stone has a hand** 2025
"Let he who is without sin cast the first stone." – John 8:7
This famous biblical quote still resonates today, reflecting our world where judgment and condemnation are often swift and unkind. Sometimes, a stone is not just a literal weapon but a metaphor for the malevolence that arises from fear and ignorance in our society.
This project seeks to embody the opposite of that sentiment. In hospitals, we mend the sick with compassion, without questions or judgment. No matter who they are or where they come from, our perspective is one of kindness, embracing all patients and staff as part of one unified community woven by humanity.
The Stone Has a Hand is an ongoing project by artist Cibele Vieira, created as part of her residency through The Creative Center at Mount Sinai Hospital, New York-Presbyterian Hospital, and North Central Bronx Hospital. Patients and staff engage in painting rocks as a calming and creative experience.
These rocks were then photographed against the artist's hand, set against the hospital backdrop, as a symbol of healing and connection. The resulting image has been printed in a grid format and transformed into a tablecloth—representing the unity, inclusivity, and profound strength that arise when everyone has a seat at the table.
